Why Freedom at Work is Earned, Not Given

Everyone craves a workplace where they can be left alone to do their job without being constantly micromanaged. It’s one of the key ingredients of a healthy, positive work environment. Flexibility to manage your own time, make decisions, and work with minimal supervision feels empowering, but that level of freedom isn’t simply given; it’s earned. You must be a Star employee - someone with high values AND high performance. Holding yourself accountable is a crucial skill in this equation. It doesn’t come naturally to everyone, but mastering it can be the difference between being micromanaged and being granted true freedom at work.

Staying on top of your tasks requires a proactive approach. Here are a few tips the Jon Harrison Team recently discussed in their latest podcast episode: “Holding Yourself Accountable: The Key to Freedom and Flexibility at Work”

  1. Make a List and Prioritize Tasks

It’s easy to push off difficult assignments, which then snowball into next week or next month. Tackling the hardest or most draining tasks first can prevent procrastination and keep you on track. It’s about setting priorities, sticking to them, and not letting the hard stuff get away from you.

  1. Work During Your Most Productive Time(s) of Day

Not everyone is a morning person, and that’s okay! Consider your productivity patterns as well. Identify the times of day when you feel most energized and focused, and schedule your most demanding tasks for those periods.

  1. Use Visual Cues to Stay on Track

This goes hand in hand with making a list, but a larger visual cue like using a whiteboard to write out long term visions can be helpful.

  1. Find Balance and Take Breaks

While holding yourself accountable is essential, finding balance is equally important. Whether it’s walking the dog, grabbing lunch, or just stepping away from your computer, taking that mental break can help you recharge and refocus for the rest of the day. Accountability doesn’t mean overworking yourself—it’s about managing your energy and productivity effectively.

  1. Love Deadlines!

Setting clear deadlines is essential, even for tasks that may not have specific due dates. Deadlines force you to focus and deliver, helping you stay on track and avoid last-minute stress. “As soon as possible” is never a good phrase to use when talking about a project or task. Vague phrases like this almost always cause miscommunication.

Earning freedom at work isn’t a one-time achievement. It’s the result of a consistent, ongoing effort to maintain high standards and take ownership of your responsibilities. The more you can demonstrate these qualities, the more likely you are to enjoy flexibility and freedom.

If you’re feeling micromanaged or unclear on your expectations, we recommend setting up a one-on-one with your leader to discuss the situation. While some people tend to avoid these “difficult” conversations, delaying them often adds more stress and uncertainty. Addressing concerns early can lead to better communication, clearer expectations, and less frustration down the road.
